Methods of Contraception

Contraception means the prevention of pregnancy, and has nothing to do with safe sex. Read our article on safe sex for a proper explanation on that.

The first, and most effective method of contraception is NOT to have sex. Many people forget that. You don`t have sex, you can`t get pregnant. Mother Mary was a different story. You ain`t quite so holy, so quit that smart aleck retort.

Also, one must understand that no method of contraception is truly fool-proof. None of them has a 100 % effectiveness, except perhaps hysterectomy.

Two methods which do not require external aids are the "coitus interruptus" method, and the "rhythm" method.

Coitus Interruptus

Coitus means the act of sexual intercourse, and interruptus simply means interrupt. This method simply involves the man withdrawing his penis from the lady`s vagina before ejaculation. The downside will be that ejaculation will start before the orgasm, and the man may not realise that he has started ejaculating before he pulls out. Also, some males may suffer from premature ejaculation.

Rhythm method

Females go through the menstual cycle, and there is a period of the month when they are usually more fertile, just after ovulation. This method involves not having sex during this more fertile period.

Starting from the first day of menstruation as DAY 1, DAY 14 is usually the day of ovulation. Remembering that the ovum may stay within the womb and vagina for around 36 hours, and that sperm can survive for around 48 hours inside the vagina, most specialists would recommend abstaining from sex for a period of 6 days from DAY 11 to DAY 20.

Also note that some ladies may suffer from irregular menstrual cycles, and ovulation may occur earlier or later depending on hormonal changes, and that pregnancy has been recorded in females who have had sex at every day of their menstrual cycle, so this method is not fool-proof either.

Barrier method

These methods involve placing a barrier between the sperm and the ovum. These include the most common, condoms, the female version of condoms, the femidom, and the diaphragm.

Remember that the barrier has to be in place before penetration can take place. Also, with the amount of wear and tear, condoms have been known to tear, and double layers of condoms do not provide more protection either.

Also, in use of the condom, the male must withdraw the penis before the penis goes flaccid, otherwise there is a chance that the semen and sperm may spill into the female vagina.

Prevention of pregnancy

The pill. IUD. Spermicide. The pill was popular for a while in the 70s, but is now shown to cause hormonal imbalances that could predispose to cancer. Also, it tends to cause some unpleasant side effects, and the pill is presently not as popular as before.

The pill, depending on your prescription, may contain oestrogen, progesterone, or both. It serves to "trick" the body and prevent implantation of the ovum on the womb wall.

The IUD, by causing manual irritation of the womb wall, prevents implantation.

Spermicide acts by killing sperm, and preventing pregnancy.

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception is for emergencies, like when your condom breaks, when you`ve had sex and there is a high chance of an unwanted pregnancy. It is possible for up to 36 hours after intercourse to "cancel" the pregnancy, through various methods, like inducing immediate menstruation.

However, emergency contraception should not be taken as a regular form of intercourse as it does wreck havoc with a lady`s hormonal cycles.
